We Are Not You
Self-Defense is a human right. Every individual being able to protect himself from harm is a fundamental principle of our society. Everyone should be entitled to this right without discrimination. The state doesn’t have a monopoly on force. We delegate that responsibility to them, with the understanding that they’ll administer the laws equitably. Those laws should never require us to be defenseless. Enforced helplessness is tyranny. When evil attacks, you can either be in a position to do something about it or you can wait and hope for help. Sometimes you are on your own. Nobody is coming to save you. Would you rather have a chance and fight back, or hide under your desk and pray to God that you’re not the next one to die? If your answer is hide and pray, that’s fine . . . for you. That’s your choice. But we are not you.

Last Bastions
The state of written science fiction . . . is a bit like the state of western civilization: under assault from all sides, hollowed out, a pale shadow of what it once was.
The soldiers who once defended our grand city have been defeated.
There are invaders inside the gates, cavorting, aping their betters, and desecrating the ancient and sacred temples.
The great bazaars are empty and only a few small peddlers haunt the windy streets.
Most of the citizens who built the city, stone by stone, have been either felled by old age or have wandered away.
Cultures never truly die. At worst, they are largely extinguished, with a few traces living on as echoes in the over culture that conquered them. . . . but at best, they linger on, in the margins, on the mountaintops, in the monasteries, until the conditions are ripe for their rebirth.

Serious Bad Guys!
The Alignment. A continuing nemesis. Their mission: Wipe out history that contradicts the “narrative,” especially if it presents America in a good light. Their most effective agent is the brilliant and ruthless Forigo. The Alignment’s motto is “Justice through Alignment.” Kane, Ben’s older brother, is on a secret mission to infiltrate and bring down the Alignment.
Forigo. A man in his mid-twenties from the French-speaking section of Switzerland. Forigo is a gaunt fellow with pasty skin and black hair. His trademark look is wearing all black clothing. Latch and Porter call him the “French vampire” even though they know he’s Swiss. This infuriates Forigo, who wants to be thought of as a Swiss internationalist. Forigo is a recurring villain throughout the books. He is extremely clever, dedicated to the Alignment’s “cause,” and as unrelenting as our hunters.
Martin Keezler. Marty Keezler is a more earthy and greedy scourge than Forigo. He’s originally from Boston and has an attitude about Southerners being lazy and uneducated. He’s a former employee and now an unscrupulous rival to Ben’s father. He makes his employees call him captain. He’s always been a bully toward Ben, whom he calls “Benjy boy,” and is not above releasing his Boston goons (his cousins, who have done prison time) to perform mayhem on the hunters. His boat is the Yankee Darling.
